Under the leadership of the Operations and Engineering Manager, the Senior Electrical Engineer will provide technical support for Heartland Generation’s Battle River Carbon Hub (BRCH) team.

This support will include technical research, evaluation of equipment options, cost estimating, troubleshooting and regulatory compliance.

As the project lifecycle advances, engineering activities will encompass creating technical specifications, reviewing and evaluating bid proposals, performing design reviews and providing technical oversight.

The successful candidate may also have opportunities to participate in business development activities and emerging technology initiatives.

  What you’ll be doing:

  Act as the electrical engineering lead on the BRCH project.

Provide technical leadership for power generation project development activities including technology assessment, conceptual design, bid evaluation, and contract reviews.

Lead project electrical engineering services such as:

develop electrical design basis develop and refine project electrical scope, review changes ensuring compliance with the change management processes participate in relevant meetings, prepare progress reports and comply with required quality assurance procedures provide technical advice during procurement, construction and commissioning activities  provide electrical input in the development of operation, maintenance, and start-up philosophies for the BRCH project interpret and apply industry standards and Heartland Generation best practices and methodologies to ensure code compliance but also balance cost, quality, operability, and reliability objectives Provide technical assurance reviews and support the development of PFD’s, P&ID’s, SLD, and other project related documents for the BRCH project and other minor projects as needed.

Provide technical expertise to support interactions with regulatory bodies (AESO, AUC, etc.) and lead/assist with regulatory process execution from project inception to final completion.

Assess, recruit, and manage consultants, contractors and suppliers as required in fulfilling project resource requirements.

Promote and reinforce Heartland Generation’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment policies and procedures.

  What you must have:

Electrical Engineering degree from a recognized post-secondary institution and registered as a Professional Engineer in good standing with APEGA, or other provincial Professional Engineering Regulatory Association and qualifies for inter-provincial mobility.

Minimum 12–15 years of relevant industry experience in power generation or comparable industry with similar equipment. Consideration will be given to individuals with more extensive applicable experience.

Experience with power station (gas, thermal, or hydro) or similar industry operations and maintenance is desirable.

Experience with any of the following is desirable:

high voltage equipment, HV and LV electrical distribution systems, MV and LV switchgear and MCC, MV and LV motors, transformers, battery and UPS systems, protection devices and systems, and AESO / grid compliance.

Familiarity with the Transmission/Distribution connection process in Alberta is an asset.

Self-starter who can work independently, is coachable, and is motivated to learn and develop.

Effective team player with strong interpersonal skills who leads by example.

Demonstrated ability to take ownership of assigned work.

Seeks feedback from other team members and clients to improve quality of deliverables; committed to building on existing and developing new expertise.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Proficient with Microsoft Office and cloud-based software.

Project management training and experience is an asset.

Valid Class 5 driver’s license.

  Where you’ll be working:

This position is located in our Head Office in Calgary, Alberta and will require travel to remote site locations for field work up to 25% of the time.

This position is eligible for our Hybrid Work Arrangement schedule whereby some remote work from home days is optional.
